More about 20" Tubes
How to Choose the Right 20-Inch Inner Tube
Because the 20-inch wheel size is used across vastly different cycling disciplines, finding the exact right tube involves slightly more than just matching the diameter. You need to consider the tire width, the valve type, and the level of durability your riding demands.
Matching Tire Width and Volume
A BMX street tire built for heavy impacts might require a wide 20 x 2.4 tube, while a standard youth cruiser might only need a 20 x 1.75 size. To find your size, check the raised lettering on the sidewall of your current tire. Inner tubes are designed to stretch, so they are sold in width ranges (such as 20 x 1.50 - 2.125). Make sure the width printed on your tire falls within the range listed on the tube's packaging to avoid pinch flats or over-stretching the rubber.
Schrader vs. Presta Valves
The vast majority of 20-inch wheels utilize Schrader valves. These are the same durable, spring-loaded valves found on car tires, making them easy to inflate with almost any standard pump. However, certain high-end youth racing bikes and specialized folding bikes may use Presta valves, which are narrower and feature a locking top nut. You must match the tube's valve to the hole drilled in your wheel's rim; a Schrader valve is too wide to fit through a Presta-specific rim.
Standard vs. Heavy-Duty Tubes
BMX riders and kids can be exceptionally hard on their equipment. If you frequently suffer from pinch flats (snake bites) from under-rotated landings, or if your local riding area is prone to thorns and glass, consider upgrading to a heavy-duty or puncture-resistant tube. These options feature significantly thicker rubber walls that hold up to abuse better than a standard lightweight tube, keeping you rolling longer between flats.
