More about Tire Sealant
Your Guide to Bike Tire Sealant
Tire sealant is the magic liquid that keeps tubeless riders rolling and can save tube-users from a long walk home. This guide explains what it is and how to choose the right one for your bike.
What is Tire Sealant?
Most common in tubeless bike tires, sealant is a liquid (usually latex-based) that coats the inside of your tire. When a thorn, piece of glass, or sharp rock creates a puncture, the escaping air pressure forces the sealant into the hole. The sealant particles then clog the hole and solidify, sealing the puncture almost instantly—often without the rider even noticing.
The Benefits of Tubeless Sealant
Going tubeless with sealant is the number-one upgrade for modern mountain and gravel bikes.
- Fewer Flats: It seals most common punctures automatically.
- Better Traction: It allows you to run lower tire pressures without the risk of "pinch flatting" an inner tube. Lower pressure means more tire grip and a smoother ride.
- Less Weight: It's often lighter than a standard inner tube.
Sealant for Mountain Bikes & E-Bikes
For MTB tire sealant, riders need a formula that can seal larger punctures (up to 1/4" or more) caused by aggressive trail riding. Look for sealants with larger or mixed-size sealing particles. Because e-bikes hit obstacles harder and put more wear on tires, using a robust, high-performance sealant is crucial for preventing ride-ending flats.
Sealant for Inner Tubes
You can also buy sealant designed to be injected into inner tubes. While it won't prevent pinch flats, it's highly effective at sealing punctures from thorns and debris, making it a great choice for commuters and casual riders.
