For years, cross-country race bikes carried a reputation for being blisteringly fast uphill but twitchy, harsh, and intimidating on technical descents. The latest generation of full-suspension women's mountain bikes has completely rewritten that rulebook. Nowhere is that progress more apparent than in the redesigned Liv Pique lineup.

Fresh off premier World Cup podiums, a U.S. Cross-Country Marathon National Championship title, and a dominant victory at the legendary Leadville Trail 100 MTB, the Liv Pique is proving that elite pedaling efficiency and rowdy descending capability belong on the very same bike. Following its global launch, top cycling editors took both the pure-race Pique Advanced SL and the trail-ready Pique X Advanced SL into the wild. Here is how both bikes perform on real singletrack and what the experts have to say.

Two Flavors of Speed: Pique Advanced SL vs. Pique X Advanced SL

Liv engineered the new Pique platform to serve two distinct styles of off-road riding, sharing a shared foundation of ultra-light carbon construction, women-specific geometry, and responsive suspension kinematics.

  • Liv Pique Advanced SL (Pure Cross-Country): Built for flat-out XC racing and speed-focused endurance riding. It features 120mm of front and rear suspension travel paired with an ultra-lightweight carbon chassis engineered to maximize watt transfer on steep marathon climbs.
  • Liv Pique X Advanced SL (Downcountry & Technical Trail): Designed for riders who want cross-country climbing speed with trail bike descending manners. It bumps front fork travel to 130mm, specs wider rims and burlier rubber, features more aggressive cockpit components, and integrates clean down tube frame storage for spare tubes, tools, and snacks.

What the Gear Reviewers Are Saying

1. "An Absolute Blast on Technical Trails"

Emma Wooldridge from The Loam Wolf took the Liv Pique X Advanced SL 0 out to the rocky, punchy singletrack of Vallromanes, Spain. Her focus was seeing whether the bike could back up its lightweight trail claims when the terrain turned raw.

On the climbs, the bike's low weight and stiff bottom bracket turned steep fire roads into an easy spin. "Climbing the Pique X Advanced SL was an effortless activity," Wooldridge noted, explaining that grinding out 2,000 vertical feet felt surprisingly manageable.

Pointing the bike down rough descents revealed the true character of the Pique X. "I had an absolute blast ripping this bike down some of Spain's singletrack trails," she wrote. "The bike felt a tad less skittish, more stable, and gave me more confidence to tackle the tech."

2. "I Got Up Hills I Had No Business Climbing"

Aliseea Harbertson of Bikers Edge also tested the Pique X Advanced SL, exploring how it bridges the gap between pure XC efficiency and playful trail manners. Despite openly identifying as a non-climber, Harbertson found the bike transformed technical ascents entirely.

"The Pique flies," Harbertson reported. "I got up steep hills I had no business climbing."

When gravity took over, the responsive chassis and supple 130mm fork allowed her to pop over trail obstacles and flick through tight corners without fighting the bike. Her final takeaway highlighted the versatility of the downcountry platform: "It is a do-it-all machine for riders who want one bike that never really feels out of place."

3. "Undeniably Fast Without the Twitchiness"

Over on the race-tuned 120mm Pique Advanced SL, Singletrack Magazine editor Heather spent two full months aboard the flagship Pique Advanced SL 0. While she initially worried that a thoroughbred race bike might feel skittish on rough home trails, the bike quickly proved otherwise.

"The Pique Advanced SL 0 is undeniably fast, but is so responsive and easy to manoeuvre that I connected with it quickly," she wrote.

From loose sand and slick rock gardens to chunky natural drops, Heather recorded personal bests across her regular testing loops. She credited the bike's forgiving carbon compliance and planted rear wheel traction for giving her the confidence to clean descents she normally avoided on an XC setup. Her verdict proved that the Pique Advanced SL is comfortable enough for all-day trail epics, not just quick 90-minute race heats.

4. "Fast Uphill and Fast Downhill"

Katharina Binzenhöfer, mountain bike editor at BikeX, tested the Pique Advanced SL during its European launch in Barcelona. The bike's climbing efficiency stood out immediately, tracking straight up loose, stepped rock faces with zero rear wheel slip.

Binzenhöfer was equally impressed by how grounded the lightweight 29er felt when hitting high speeds on loose fire roads and technical switchbacks. She emphasized that riders do not need a race plate on their handlebars to appreciate the speed of this platform.

"Even those not on the starting line will find it a very fun and fast bike for their local trails," Binzenhöfer concluded. "Fast uphill and fast downhill. What could be better?"

Why Women-Specific Mountain Bike Geometry Matters

Unlike unisex frames that simply use shorter stems or pastel paint jobs, Liv builds every bike from the ground up using female-specific anatomical data and muscle activation studies. The Pique platform features tailored carbon layups that prevent the harsh, overly rigid ride feel lighter riders often experience on standard mountain bike frames. Custom suspension tuning ensures that lighter shock damper settings deliver active, supple traction without having to drop air pressures below recommended operational ranges.
