Learn More About Cycling Baselayers
Your Guide to Cycling Baselayers
A good cycling baselayer is the secret weapon for staying comfortable on any ride, in any season. It's the layer worn directly against your skin, designed to manage moisture and regulate your core temperature, making your outer layers (like jerseys and jackets) perform better.
Why You Need a Baselayer for Cycling
Unlike a simple t-shirt, a technical baselayer is made from materials that pull sweat away from your skin (this is called "wicking").
- In Summer: A lightweight, sleeveless baselayer wicks sweat away to the surface of your jersey, where it can evaporate. This creates a cooling effect and prevents that clammy, sticky feeling.
- In Winter: A thermal baselayer (often made of merino wool or a heavier synthetic) also wicks sweat, but its primary job is to trap a thin layer of warm air against your body. This is crucial, as damp skin leads to rapid chilling.
Baselayers for Mountain Biking & E-Biking
For mountain biking, baselayers are essential. Rides often involve a hot, sweaty climb followed by a fast, windy descent. A baselayer wicks moisture on the way up, so you're not soaked in cold sweat on the way down. They also help prevent chafing from backpack straps. For e-bike riders, who may not sweat as much on climbs, a light baselayer is still key for managing moisture and blocking wind.
Materials: Merino Wool vs. Synthetic
- Synthetic (Polyester/Polypropylene): These are excellent at wicking moisture and dry extremely fast. They are often more durable and affordable.
- Merino Wool: Merino is a miracle fabric. It wicks well, provides incredible warmth even when damp, and is naturally odor-resistant, making it perfect for long rides or multi-day adventures.
